Salvador Dalí (1904-1989), hailed as one of the 20th century's foremost artists, seamlessly wove surrealism, symbolism, and avant-garde influences into imagination. Beyond his profound artistic impact, Dali's legacy extends into the realm of fashion as well, where his visionary approach effortlessly intersects with the stylists and designers, exemplifying a timeless fusion of art and lifestyle. One of his most popular works, The Persistence of Memory as shown above, showcases Dali's admiration of time and existence, as well as symbolism in general.
In the 1930s, Dalí created the Lobster Telephone, a classic example of a surrealist object, made from the conjunction of items not normally associated with each other, resulting in something both playful and menacing. Dalí believed that such objects could reveal the secret desires of the unconscious.
Fashion icon Elsa Schiaparelli then created this unusual lobster dress inpsired by the Surrealist's work. This is a demonstration of the interconnected nature of fashion and art in the early 20th century. In Schiaparelli’s Spring/Summer 2024 Collection, its current creative director Daniel Roseberry also took a nod to Dali’s Schiaparelli Lobster Dinner dress, in different versions, one of which was beautifully worn by celebrity Zendaya.
